about

The tunes came out of me moving increasingly away from guitar and towards using hardware synths like the Korg MS20. I had always made music as part of duos or bands but wanted to try and play everything myself this time. My neighbours were probably relieved when I finished recording the drum tracks in my living room. Nearly all the drum and guitar tracks are edits of first or second takes. I had to work really quickly while family members or neighbours were out – this helped avoid over-thinking parts; I never used more than 3 mics on anything as I didn’t have time... or mics. Most of the synths have been put through my monster guitar amp or pedalboard as I got obsessed by adding just a bit of distortion to everything.

The music is inspired by 70s German electronic music and also stuff from the current golden age of synthesizer-based film soundtracks. Repetition is the key theme – I think I just wanted to lose myself with interlocking arpeggios as a way of making myself forget about the stresses of my day job.

I will be forever grateful for the amazing linocut cover art by Ieuan Edwards aka The Black Gold Press. I originally asked if I could use an existing print but he insisted on a bespoke piece and chiselled lino all night to turn around the print in 24 hours. Jules Bigg – one of the original team behind the launch of Ramsgate Music Hall did the photography and graphic design, the man is a wizard. I am truly lucky to live in an area where, if you chuck a rock in the air, it will land on an artist or musician.
